What Is In The Swine Flu Vaccine: A Primer

By Elaina George, MD
There has been a lot of confusion about what ingredients are in the H1N1 Vaccine. In order to distill the information to make it easier for you to make an informed choice, here is a brief synopsis of the information provided by the manufacturers in their package inserts.
There are 4 manufactures who have been approved to sell H1N1 vaccine in the US. They are: Novartis, CSL, Sanofi/Pasteur and MedImmune

1. Novartis makes an injectable vaccine for ages 4 and above
Ingredients: Thimerosal (Mercury) both in the single dose and the multi dose vials
Antibiotics - polymyxin and neomycin (can be neurotoxic)

####
Manufactured with phenol (the chemical used on skin in cosmetic face peals to remove wrinkles)

Note: They recommend that children ages 4-9 get 2 injections one month apart. This would increase the risk from a reaction to the mercury (e.g, neurological damage such as Gullain-Barre or possibly Autism)

2. CSL makes an injectable vaccine. Only the multi dose vial contains thimerosal

3. Sanofi/Pasteur - Only the multi dose vial contains thimerosal

vaccine is made with polyethelene glycol (antifreeze) and formaldehyde (a chemical used in embalming).

*These three vaccines are grown in chicken embryo cells. So if a person has severe allergies to eggs, they are at risk of having an allergic reaction and should therefore not take the vaccine.

4. MedImmune makes a live attenuated H1N1 vaccine that has an intranasal delivery.

It does not contain thimerosal, but has the food additive MSG (monosodium glutamate) which can cause reactions in some people who are sensitive, it also contains gentamycin (an antibiotic which can be neurotoxic and cause hearing loss)

As per the package inserts from all of the manufacturers:

Note: "Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility
Neither FLUVIRIN nor the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine have been evaluated for carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or for impairment of fertility."

*In other words, NONE of the H1NI vaccines have been evaluated for the possible potential to cause cancer, birth defects or its effect on fertility. This is according to the information from all of the manufacturers.

Michael Vick Win Humane Society Award from PETA

This headline would have been more believable "Michael Vick Win Dog Lover of the Year Award Presented by PETA than Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

What has he done? In my opinion NOTHING!!

If you disagree then show me some great world peace achievement this guy, that shouldn't even be president, has accomplished.

This has the be the 2009 JOKE of the Year! What a FARCE, if I ever had any respect for the Nobel Peace Prize it is totally gone now. Then again they liked Carter, another joke!

It's Simple, Mr. Simpleton

Leave the military decisions to those that have put their lives in harms way not hiding from their duty. Go hold hands with Pelosi and Reid they haven't served a day in the military and together collectively haven't a clue!

And, after the million dollar debacle in Denmark maybe one should stay home and play with community organizing. Oh, by the way when you said the chase for the Olympics wouldn't cost the US taxpayers anything, who paid for our plane, Air Force One?

Oh, and how can one say they know or knew nothing about ACORN when you worked with and for them - dah sounds like someone isn't telling the truth, again!

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling . . .

Rawhide, the buses are rolling towards D.C. and there is going to be some rawhide after they arrive. In my adult life I have not seen anything like this and believe it could possibly be the turning point in our country, amazing.

Jimmy Carter was no winner, and folks expressed their opinions but the two parties did not come together against a common cause like they're doing now. Oh, you have the "yellow dog demos" that are standing by their man but what I'm seeing and hearing is Americans coming together and there is no party, they don't like any elected official on either side of the fence.

Just let me remind you what this is all about, the country elected a person and organization that thinks they can handle your affairs better than you. So, quite possibly an unqualified person resides in your White House, making up rules (czars) and getting bills passed that finally got your attention when the Stimulus (TAX) hit you in one place that it counts your wallet and if that wasn't enough then he hits you with a stupid health plan that will increase taxes and give you poor service and this is to take care of 15% of the population of which a large portion don't want or don't deserve your dollars for their care!!!

I support and I hope it is we support the DC Tea Party and on today is Coach Dave Daubenmire from Ohio that is in the news just trying to get his US Representative to have a Town Hall Meeting and the cowardly Rep Zack Space won't do it. I wonder if this Space cadet will do as we ask and take the health care plan and Social Security? My suggestion is to vote Space right out of office as soon as possible. Let Zack Space go talk to himself!

Do As I Say, Not As I Do - Congressional Motto

How many times have you heard this old saying or said it about a bad parenting situation or even said it to yourself under certain circumstances? Is this not exactly what our Congress is telling us and doing today? Here are just a few examples:

Thy shalt not kill, unless you're a senator named Kennedy

Thy shalt not commit adultery, too many to name except there's always the big one Clinton

Thy shalt pay taxes on time, unless you're Sec. of Treasury or Rep. Charles Rangel

Thy shalt not lie, unless you're Speaker of the House Pelosi

And, the list goes on, the point being is our Congress wants us to live under a system they would have no part of. Let's just take the current issue of health care. How many of OUR elected congress people will stand up and say I will give up my Congressional Health Care Plan that is good for life and take whatever we decide for the citizens? Find one, they're far a few if any. But, this is the point we must MAKE our Congress People live under the same laws, rules and policies they make us live under. Including if you commit a crime oh say like murder, one should be tried, right Senator Kennedy?

I know the folks for the most part reading this agree but we must get the folks that aren't reading it or thinking about it to understand. Businessmen and women should make business decisions not idiots in positions of power that have never made payroll, run a lemonade stand or done anything else worthwhile. We must have leaders that are proud of this country and not apologize for anything our forefathers did or that we have done. As a country we've not been perfect but a damn site better than any other country ever on this earth.

Finally just a quick thought on racism. I have never seen a President more racist than Obama and it is going to lead to BIG problems in the future mark my word. What he said was NO mistake and will be at some point a rallying call. Who was it that said, Stupid is as stupid does? Mr. Gump I believe, think about it, is he stupid or setting us up?

Make OUR elected officials live by the rules that they legislate for us so they can say, Do AS I Say and As I Do. By the way would someone please point out to me where in the Constitution does it say OUR elected representatives shall have privileges unlike the rest of the citizenry?

Please think about this and pass it on or read other blogs at www.americaswebradio.com

Healthcare Reform by Dr. Elaina George

An honest conversation on healthcare reform, insurance companies & the doctor/patient relationship

Elaina F. George, MD

www.peachtreeentcenter.com

Now that President Obama has put heath care reform on the agenda, I am really afraid that the needs of patients and their physicians will continue to be ignored. I believe that good medical care is a right and not a privilege. However, the drive for true reform has been hijacked by the insurance and pharmaceutical industry.

I have seen a disturbing trend in medicine since I started practicing medicine in 1998. It seems to be getting worse. I am an ear, nose and throat surgeon in solo private practice in Atlanta, GA. I have a unique perspective on the health care system. I truly believe that the voices of average physicians need to be heard.

Imagine going to an ER after sustaining an injury to your face, sitting for hours finally being seen by an ER physician. You are given a CT scan, but not physically examined or treated. Instead you are told to see an ENT specialist and then paying for the privilege. Or what if you have a nose bleed and go to the ER 3 times over 2 days. The first time you are not even seen by an ER doctor. The second time you get a nasal decongestant but no IV fluid. The 3rd time you get your nose packed and told to follow up with an ENT doctor in 48 hours to have the packing removed. You call the ENT doctor on call and you are given an appointment in one month for the packing removal. These are two examples of patients who have presented to my office over the past 2 weeks.

I joined a large single specialty group practice when I left residency. In order to practice medicine and not just be a 'mill' I opened my own practice. I stopped taking HMOs because of the restrictions they placed on my ability to take care of my patients. When our system is compared to a system that has duel medical system like the Caribbean island of Antigua, the cost of medicine is controlled because the patient has a choice. Essentially, those who want to can use the public health system, but those who want to see a private physician are free to do so. The interesting difference is that people with private insurance tend to pay the physician directly and then get reimbursed directly from the insurance company. This has the effect of keeping costs down. The physician gets paid their fee at the time of service and the patient gets a portion back from the insurance company. There is no pressure for doctors to raise their fees because they are getting what they charge at the time of service. The costs associated with paperwork and re-billing denials are removed. The patient gets a discount of 40-80% as a check back from the insurance company and there are no hidden charges or cost shifting.

When the insurance company is the middle man there is a drastic decrease in what the physician is paid. For example, in a former HMO contract I was getting 18 cents on the dollar. I have since negotiated better contracts and now average about 55 cents on the dollar. However, In order to make up the short fall, the pressure has been to either see more patients or raise my prices. If you contrast this with a specialty that does not take insurance it is easy to see what has happened to the cost of care for the patient without insurance. For example, in plastic surgery - the price for a rhinoplasty or a face lift has essentially remained unchanged over the years because they are strictly fee for service.

In short, the cost of medicine has risen because of the insurance companies - the premiums paid have not gone to doctors, but instead has gone to the insurance company in CEO bonuses and investments in software and/or gatekeeper physicians and nurses who get bonuses for rationing healthcare by denying necessary procedures and tests. I can give plenty of examples of necessary medical care denied to my patients by a nurse making clinical decisions. The insurance companies have developed an elaborate system designed to pay as little and as late as possible (over 1 year after service in some cases). There is little oversight or regulation of this industry, and physicians have little recourse. For example, even if I get pre-authorization to perform a procedure. The insurance company can deny payment after the surgery is done and I cannot bill the patient because of the denial even if it is arbitrary. This has the effect of poisoning the doctor patient relationship.

There has been a disconnection of the doctor patient relationship for many reasons. Some of the most important are:

1. The rise of insurance companies as the middle man has increased the cost of medicine by rationing health care and limiting access (through rising premiums). This will get worse under a universal healthcare system. Insurance companies will wield even more power over access to health care. They stand to gain the most by having more people paying premiums. Health care will likely be rationed unless there are provisions in place to assure that: a) what is "medically necessary" is determined by the physician; and b) once pre-authorized by the insurance company, the medical treatment can not be arbitrarily denied.

2. The reimbursement to physicians has dropped every year since I left residency. That has led physicians to increase patient volume and add extenders such as physician assistants and medical assistants. This has been one of the biggest blows to the quality of health care and the doctor patient relationship because it has severely limited the time the doctor has to spend with his or her patient.

3. Disease has become a big business. Instead of promoting wellness and prevention, the cost has been driven up by managing chronic diseases. We are prescribing more medication, but our patients are sicker.

4. Direct marketing by big Pharma to patients has driven demand for expensive but not necessarily more effective or safe prescription medication.

The above mentioned problems must be addressed to insure that good healthcare is not permanently disabled.

RSS On Twitter and Medicine on Call with Dr. George

By now I'm sure a lot of you have heard of this new internet phenomenon known as Twitter. Essentially, you sign up for an account and you have 160 words to tell anyone who wants to listen what you are doing. You can follow people and people can follow you. It's been called microblogging by some. Anyway, I'm not really sure what purpose it serves, but it seems like everyone is interested in this new thing so we're on board to see what kind of following we can get so check out our Twitter RSSWebRadio and follow us. Basically, I'll try to post schedule updates and things so check it out.

Also, be sure to check out our new health show Medicine on Call with Dr. Elaina George. Dr. George believes in personal medical care and she finds the root of the problem, not just prescribes medicine to fit the symptoms. It's no secret that in any form of the entertainment business people promote things because someone is paying them to. Well, I can speak from personal experience, as a former patient of hers, that you will not find a more compassionate or caring doctor in Atlanta (haven't seen doctors in any other cities in my 24 years). My parents and I put our trust in Dr. George and you should too. If anything, you should listen to Medicine on Call at 9am at www.radiosandysprings.com and www.americaswebradio.com

Roadkill side show cooking!

So, as the Redneck Smoker is tested out getting ready for the rest of the season, I think it is best to post some of the things we talked about on the show. Here is a list of woods and profiles and some good starting recipes that you can change up and start your summer grilling... yeah, that's right! Summer is right around the corner!!

Smoking:
Alder: light, delicate flavor excellent for salmon, chicken, and pork.
Apple and Cherry: sweet, fruity flavor that's geat for poultry, game birds and pork
Hickory: strong, pungent bacon-like flavor used for beef, pork and ham. This is the most popular of the flavoring woods.
Maple: a sweet, smoky flavor ideal for game meat, poultry and pork.
Mesquite: a little sweeter than Hickory, but still strong, this wood is great for richly flavored meats such as lamb beef and duck.
Pecan: a subtle but rich flavor that complements turkey or other poultry.

Brining
1/4 cup kosher salt
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
4 cups water
Combine all ingredients and submerge protein desired to brine. Allow to soak in brine solution for minimum of 24 hours. Good base brine and can be used with poultry or pork.

Brine for smoked salmon
1 gallon water
1 cup kosher salt
1 cup brown sugar
lemon pepper to taste
1/4 cup of Old Bay
freshly ground black pepper to taste.
4 cloves garlic, crushed or to taste
2 Tbsp of red pepper flakes
4 lemons, sliced and crushed
2 oranges, sliced and crushed
1 lime, sliced and crushed
1 large yellow onion, sliced
Combine all ingredients and submerge desired fish to brine. Trout is a good substitution for recipe if salmon is not available. Since fish is more delicate than other protein cuts, fully submerge fish in solution for only 12 to 24 hours.

Turkey Brine
2 gallons water
1 1/2 cups kosher salt
1/4 cup minced garlic
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup brown sugar
Combine all ingredients and submerge turkey completely in brine. Allow brine to soak turkey for minimum of 48 hours, but no more than 72 hours. This is a great base recipe where creative herbs and spices can be added for flavoring depending on wood chips to be used
Come join the Roadkill sideshow Saturday from 11 am to 12 pm.

Mustard, ground 1/2 tsp
Garlic Powder 1/4 tsp
Worcestershire 1 tsp
Parsley, fresh 2 TBSP
Horseradish, drained 2 tsp

Place the chicken wing sections in a nonreactive container. Pour to cover the chicken
sections with the buttermilk. Allow chicken to marinate in a refrigerator for a minimum of 3 days. Heat fryer to 350 degrees. (This is the BIKERS job) While fryer is heating, combine all dry batter ingredients into a mixing bowl large enough to contain chicken pieces. One by one, take a piece of chicken from the buttermilk marinade and dredge in the four mixture. Immediately add the pieces of chicken to the fryer. Fry the chicken until its internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. (We canʼt get anyone sick!) Rule of thumb, fry it till it floats. Remove from fryer and serve immediately or toss with your favorite sauce. Serve with Crumbled Blue Cheese Dressing with Celery and Carrots

Remove from fryer and place into bowl lined with paper towel. Immediately add Kosher Salt, to taste. Hold to the side. Heat large skillet on medium high flame. Add butter to skillet. When butter begins to melt, add chopped onions. When the sides of the onions begin to slightly turn brown, add the pulled pork. Season to taste. Cook to completely reheat pork and hold to side. To build MACHO Nachos: Heat oven to 350 degrees or turn top broiler on. Start with one layer on plate with fresh fried tortillas chips. Sprinkle 1/2 the cheese over the chips. Next layer 1/2 the Pulled Pork on top. Make another layer of the fresh fried tortilla chips. Follow by adding the drained black beans, remaining pork and the remaining cheese. Lastly, make one final layer of chips on top. Garnish the top of the MACHO Nachos with the roasted poblano peppers, the diced plum tomatoes and shredded cheese. Place plate in oven and melt the cheese. Remove plate carefully, itʼs HOT!!! Top MACHO Nachos with Cilantro leaves and dollop of sour cream and serve.

Radio Sandy Springs: New Location, Same Great Programming!

For all the loyal listeners out there who were wondering what was up with our programming recently, Radio Sandy Springs has moved! After three great years over at the old location we have moved onto bigger and better things. Well...smaller, but better things. We have moved into a smaller space, but are maximizing the space we have more than ever before and the new location is much nicer than our old one! We have moved to:

8010 Roswell Rd, Suite 290
Atlanta, Ga 30350

The actual offices are bigger than at the old locale, we have both women's AND men's bathrooms on the floor (which trust us is a HUGE improvement for us male folk here at the office) and this building is much more secure than our old one.

It's been a hectic couple of weeks having to go off the air during the move and suspend programming, but as of yesterday, January 6th, we are back up and operational so despite the change in location, one thing won't change: Our commitment to bringing you the best and most diverse programming anywhere on radio!
