The Florida Electorate has spoken, India has more Bird Flu than Carter has little liver pills (that shows my age for you that have no clue about what I’m talking about) and the History Channel is running the 10 most likely ways of the annihilation of mankind. In all three cases there is not a lot of good news but, every cloud has the proverbial silver lining.

For the voter if you don’t like what you’re seeing then get off your tail and do something. The “silver lining” is maybe the results to date will help get people more active!

For the Bird Flu we had a very nice email from a lady in Dallas, Texas thanking us for running the Infectious Disease Hour and informing folks how important it is to be prepared and we agree. To the lady in Dallas and the Pandemic Flu Information Forum where she found us, THANK YOU!

And, as for the History Channel I was buy in until they got to the most likely way mankind will be destroyed – Al Gore and his earth heating. Folks and I know some of you are very opinionated on Globe Warming but the fact is climate and world climate changes happen with or without Al Gore and man since the Earth was created. I think there is a term today that best covers what is happening in all three cases, and I’ll use the nicer version – STUFF HAPPENS – GET A LIFE AND LET’S ALL DO THE BEST WITH WHAT WE HAVE!

Once again I want to thank Dr. Henry Niman for being on the Infectious Disease Hour on www.radiosandysprings.com, Dr. Patrick O’Neal and Dr. Michael Dailey for all their support for the station and the show.

Please keep informed about the Avian Flu and always be a Boy Scout and BE PREPARED!

From Jon Copsey

So much for thinking about a weekly blog. It was only ever a pipe dream, really.

I did no go into the station on what would have been my second Saturday. This was due to several reasons, none of them being laziness. Promise. As you may recall, that was the Saturday that Georgia snowed. I’m sure that within a few years it will have entered the realm of myth and be told to wide-eyed youngsters about that ting called ‘snow.’

Being a Northerner, I didn’t see much problem with the .4 inches, but had no faith in the driving skills of my fellow motorists. In the two trips I made that morning, I witnessed several accidents or the remains of an accident. So you understand why I was not keen on driving from Roswell down to everyone’s favorite radio station.

I did, in fact, show up at the station this past Saturday. Not that there was much to do. Most of the shows were repeats that day, so other than Temple of Health it was all on automatic. Dan showed me their production room and instructed me on the magical ways of cutting a recorded show into segments and taking out the ads.

You have no idea how mind numbing a task that was.

Next weekend, for the Master Gardener Hour, I will be the roaming station remotely operating the boards. It seems a fairly straightforward task, but I’m sure something will happen during such things. It seems awfully soon to be giving me such a task, having really only done a few hours of work with the station, but David seems to have confidence in me (poor soul). Like I said, it does not seem too complicated.

In other news, who knew the State of the Union was tonight? I guess all the excitement over the presidential primaries didn’t leave enough time for the usual week long gearing up for the address that the news channels do. I wonder what will be on the agenda for the coming year? Only one way to find out.

I think that’s all for now, so happy listening!

Potential Pandemic Avian (Bird) Flu

Last night was a very good show with Dr. Henry Niman, maybe a little over my head with details, but very good with a number of comments already sent to the station. If you’d like to listen it will be archived later today 5PM The Infectious Disease Hour on www.radiosandysprings.com.

I’m often asked how prepared is Georgia? The answer is Dr. Patrick O’Neal, Director of Medical Preparedness for the Georgia Department of Human Resources. Dr. O’Neal takes all potential hazards – natural, man-made and health very seriously and does all within his power to inform and help the state prepare! Dr. O’Neal will continue to be asked to be on the Infectious Disease Hour to help inform all of us about the state of preparedness of Georgia.

I’d like to ask those reading this out side of Georgia to let us know how prepared your state is in case of a disaster.

Infectious Disease Hour

Monday at 5PM and repeated at 7PM

Will be my guest discussing the potential Avian Flu Pandemic and the continued spread of the H5N1 virus in fowl throughout the world and what potentially can be done.

From David's Desk

The other day I had the very unpleasant experience of trying to fly Spirit Air to Orlando. Had I done my homework, I would have quickly found I was not the first to experience Spirit Air’s customer service policy of “we don’t give a damn about you only your money” this is backed up online by using Google and a Spirit Air search and what Spirit Air’s CEO had to say.

Question and Suggestion:

Has anyone out there had a good experience flying (assuming they took off) Spirit Air?

Suggestion – don’t fly Spirit Air if you can hitch a ride on a mule train!

From David's Desk

I’m only a so, so Bill O’Reilly fan but I must say he does do his homework. That doesn’t mean one has to agree with everything he says but a current issue is John Edwards was on Letterman’s Show and Edwards spouted incorrect figures and problems with vets. Then Letterman called O’Reilly a liar. In both cases neither Edwards or Letterman knew or know what they are talking about, O’Reilly did, does and brought out the facts.

It is my opinion that John Edwards was using an issue he really didn’t know about to try and gain some kind of attention using our military veterans. And, Letterman is just a fool.

Radio Sandy Springs does as much as we can to support our veterans and today’s military which I think is the greatest ever. Are there problems in the VA, yes but one has to understand that some of, if not many of, the problems are with the veterans themselves. There is NO perfect system and our government and all the bull that’s within can’t fix everything but, it is there and can be used. I smoked and until I personally decided to quit, it wasn’t going to happen and until the vet takes the first step the VA can’t help! How in the world can the VA go out, look for and find every homeless vet and give them a bed each night? Come on folks, lets think this through.

Like so many other things in our country it is easy to find fault and criticize but our system is so much better than any others how about those with influence and national TV shows picking up the idea of helping instead of trying to get laughs off their own stupidity!

Dan's Even More Instant Replay

Integrity in coaching is a dying concept. College athletes are limited in their options if they want to leave a school. They can either transfer to another school in the same classification(like going from Georgia to Georgia Tech) and sit out a year, or transfer to a school in a lower classification (like going from Georgia to Georgia Southern) so they can play immediately. Professional athletes can sit out and not get paid or harm their public image obnoxiously lobbying to get traded or released. So why is it that coaches, the leaders of men, allowed to break a contract without much of, or any, penalty?

The Bobby Petrino mess has been talked to death in this town. The Falcons hired Jacksonville Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith to be their new head coach. Smith's apparent choice to be his defensive coordinator is Brian VanGorder. VanGorder has local ties having spent four years as the defensive coordinator at Georgia and spent last season as the linebackers coach for the Falcons. Those ties make him a logical candidate for the job. There is only one problem. VanGorder has agreed to be the Defensive Coordinator at South Carolina. An agreement that made barely a month ago.

Looking at VanGorder's record, he makes Bobby Petrino look like Joe Paterno. In January 2005 VanGorder became the Linebackers coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Since then he has had five jobs. He spent a year in Jacksonville, a year as the Head Coach at Georgia Southern, a year with the Falcons, a month with South Carolina and now apparently he's taken the DC position with the Falcons.

Arthur Blank would be a hypocrite if he allows VanGorder back on the coaching staff of the football team he owns. If Arthur Blank is going to stand in front of a podium and say that he feels "stabbed in the back" how can he hire a coach with arguably less integrity than Bobby Petrino.

Steve Spurrier isn't exactly a sympathetic figure, especially in these parts. However, it would be incredibly wrong of Mr. Blank to treat Spurrier the way that Arkansas treated him.
Arthur Blank is a man who carries him self with class and integrity. His coaches should be held to the same standard.

Be sure to listen to my show "The Instant Replay" Wednesdays from 8-9pm and Saturdays from 1-2pm only on Radio Sandy Springs.

From David's Desk

I don’t know about you but to me it already seems that the presidential campaign has been going on for the last three or four years and I almost feel like there’s no end to it.

As a media type person and for the station I’m interested in your views. Not on how you’d vote but what you think of all the snapping and character degradation, do you take your valuable time to watch the debates and what do you think of national media coverage or anything else for that matter.

I certainly don’t have the answer but by November I know I’ll be sick of hearing the campaign stuff. The Ponderosa, if you remember it, may start looking good again. As for the rest of the stuff on the home screen in my opinion it is getting worse every year and a total insult to one’s semi-intelligence. Again, if I’m being unfair please comment.

Finally if you or if you know of someone interested in sponsoring and hosting a radio show please have them give me a call. And, check out our fantastic shows like Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts on Tuesday, the Pediatric Health Hour on Wednesday, the National Museum of Patriotism on Sunday and so many more of interest.

I’ll blog you again soon,

David

Politics and the “Primaries” in my opinion right now the only thing less exciting was the thought of watching the new season of American Ideal. Radio Sandy Springs shows were much better and more exciting than either and one can listen to Radio Sandy Springs while keeping their eyes on something else.

Last night we had three fantastic shows, I know because I was here and listened to all of them. Gary and The Fog had two outstanding guests. I’d particularly like to mention Jon Albert the Founder of Jack & Jill – I dare you to listen and not either tear or get a lump in your throat. We must all in some way help Jon.

Do Facts Matter was very interesting and took on the subject of Catholicism and religion in general which took be totally by surprise but, very interesting. Did you know that Catholic Priest can be married?

Finally, Bernard Kearse and Following Your Passion brought back a previous guest discussing the number of WMD still out there and potential continued threat of a nuclear disaster.

From Jon Copsey

So I guess I’m the new intern. Lowest rung on the ladder and free-for-all punching bag. What a charmed life I live!

I found out about the station almost by accident, with my first thought being “Sandy Springs has a radio station?” Thankfully not only does Sandy Springs have a radio station, it has a great one with great staff.

My first day was last Saturday, January 12. Part interview and part immediate training. Walking in (a few minutes late – not a good first impression), I met with David and was rushed into the studio where he gave me a silent run-through of all the bells and whistles of production while the Temple of Health program aired.

After the Temple of Health finished David and I chatted as men do about life and the world and my eventual aspirations with the station. I have no aspirations, really, and I told him so – I am looking for a career in something so I figure I have to try as many things as I can to find just what I want.

This is getting confusing. Perhaps I should say a little about myself.

I moved to Roswell a little over a year ago. I am 25 and have more education than experience, which has led partly to my current employment quandary. I joined up with the Roswell Beacon newspaper (which was later also the Alpharetta and Milton Beacons) roughly around April and am still there, working the crazy workweek of an ace reporter. Just this last week my ‘beat’ was moved from covering Roswell (a city of over 100,000) to covering Milton (a city of about…. 5). So maybe I’ll have some free time to dedicate more than one day a week to everyone’s favorite radio station?

Anyway, David turned control of the duties to me for a good part of the Sports Off Center show at the end of the day. Dom and Bill are great guys who made the two hours zip by without any problems. That we noticed. Should there have been any production-side problems with the show, I think it’s safe to blame Bill.

Along with the production/ engineering side of things, David and I agreed it would be a shame not to capitalize on my kung-fu grip of the English language. So now I’m also doing a blog (as you may have noticed).

We’ll see how long this will last before I’m given the boot. Until then, happy listening!

Don’t forget Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts will be here Tuesday at 11:00 AM and again giving away Two Dinners for Two and their very exclusive campus restaurant!

Dr. Patrick O’Neal, MD, Director, Office of Preparedness – GEMA joins David tonight to discuss Georgia’s ability and preparedness for a potential medical, natural or terrorist disaster. Tune in at 5 PM and tell a friend!

From David's Desk

I’M GOING TO TELL YOU WHO TO VOTE FOR!

I am ashamed of the industry that I’ve been a part of for over forty years. And this year is, in my opinion, the absolute most deplorable demonstration of media trying to tell us how to vote. Again in my opinion, media be it print, radio, or television has one responsibility and that is to report not influence or endorse. One television network has been so blatant that it borders on the endorsement of a Democratic Candidate for President. In some ways I think instead of playing the little word games, subliminal word games and obvious discrimination it would be better for the medias to endorse and let the public know where they stand.

The AJC ultimately before we go to the polls comes out with their endorsements, as if one didn’t know who they were for but, at least it confirms what one is thinking. Media should do one fair thing – report! not dissect, not change, not opinionate, not say what “they” think the candidate means, not approve or disapprove – just report!

Instead of trying to tell you who to vote for the media should report and encourage you TO VOTE, not try and tell you who to vote for. And, that’s what this is about right, middle or left, express yourself by learning all you can about all candidates and then vote! Every election is important and November 2008 is no exception, please become educated about all candidates, local, state and national.

Please let me know how you feel on the subject.

Today at 11AM starts the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Art Show on Radio Sandy Springs with 2 Dinner for 2 give aways! And, a great show also. Tune in at 11:00 AM EST, today!

And don't forget,
January 16, 2008 begins the Pediatric Hour hosted by the doctors that are the Emergency Room Doctors at Scottish Rite’s Children Hospital – that’s heavy! If you have children you may know some of the doctors. Tune in to www.radiosandysprings.com at 9 AM and listen to Dr. Marty Belson and his subject . . . you’ll just have to listen.

From David's Desk

For three years I have had doctors in studio and all have generally said it’s not a matter of “if but when we have a pandemic flu”. And, most pointed to the Type A H5N1 virus known as Avian Flu. About two years ago the press was all over it but, like with most news if “it doesn’t bleed, it doesn’t read” and the press has generally dropped information regarding the Avian Flu.

The fact is as Dr. David Nabarro the Senior Coordinator of Human and Avian Flu for the United Nations said last night, “it is still with us and continues to spread in fowl”. At the same time there is hope, as folks around the world are working their tails off to find a vaccine or some other answer to avoid or minimize a pandemic. At this time with no cure or vaccine a pandemic with the virility of the H5N1 virus would affect every thing and every one. From the potential collapse of the world economy to all infrastructures, that is how bad it could potentially be!

Dr. Nabarro’s main point, the same as Dr. Dailey’s has been is to prepare. Truth is that by preparing it would be most of the same items that will be needed for any disaster, natural or otherwise. The two main products to have on hand are extra water and food and an anti-viral for all members of the household.

The final portion of being prepared is through your neighborhood and neighbors working with and watching out for each other. In my neighborhood we have total non-believers and most wouldn’t lift a finger to help unless it will benefit them. This is very unfortunate, in that you may possibly save your neighbors life or visa versa by just knowing how to start an IV. Hopefully, your neighborhood is much better than ours! If not, then start today to get their attention and formulate a plan of action, don’t formulate a plan of re-action that’s too late!
